Many hillside kitchens are built around a matched pair of Sub-Zero columns, a refrigerator on one side and a freezer on the other, hidden behind identical cabinet panels. What the pair shares and what it does not
It surprises plenty of owners: the freezer column standing flush against a warm refrigerator column is not to blame, and cannot fix it either. The split looks like this.

Why is my Sub-Zero refrigerator column warm when the freezer column is fine?
Because they are separate appliances. A refrigerator column has its own compressor, condenser, fans, controls and door seal, so a warm fresh-food column beside a healthy freezer column points to a fault inside that one unit, perhaps a dusty condenser coil, a tired fan motor, a defrost fault or a gasket letting air in.

Can both Sub-Zero columns be fixed during one appointment?
They can. $89 pays for getting the technician to your door, after which both columns, plus a wine unit or bar drawer if you have one, can be examined. Every fault is priced individually once found, and only approved work goes ahead.
What not to do while you wait
When the report reaches you secondhand
In large households the person who notices the problem is not always the person who calls us. A cook may spot that the dairy shelf feels warm, tell someone else, who then texts the owner, who is out of town. By the time the message reaches us it can read simply as "the fridge is broken," which tells a technician very little about a pair of columns.
It helps to settle three things before calling. First, which column: refrigerator or freezer, and left or right as you face them, because integrated panels make the two look identical. Second, the actual change: warmer, frostier, wetter, louder, or an alert on the control panel. Third, since when, and what else was going on then: a brief outage, a party with doors swinging open all evening, a contractor in the kitchen.
Door seals deserve a quick look too. A gasket that no longer hugs the cabinet at one corner admits warm air and can make a single column run warm while its partner is perfect.
