The busiest cold box in the house
A full-size built-in gets opened when someone is cooking. An undercounter module gets opened by everybody, all day long: kids after juice boxes, guests reaching for sparkling water during a party, someone pulling a drawer of herbs while the pan heats. Each opening swaps chilled air for room air, and a drawer gives up its cold faster than a door because the entire storage box slides out into the kitchen. In a cabinet this compact, the compressor has to win that air back again and again.
Where these units live adds to the load. They sit low, right where floor dust, sand from the beach bag and pet hair collect. They often share a cabinet run with a dishwasher or an oven tower, and that hot neighbor leans heat into the side panels. They also need room to breathe: an undercounter Sub-Zero draws in and pushes out air through the grille at its base, and a kick plate hidden behind a doormat, a stray sneaker or a later cabinet change makes the system labor longer for the setting you chose.
None of that makes the unit fragile. Small signs, sorted by what you notice first
Undercounter trouble rarely starts with a warm drawer. It starts with something easy to shrug off. These are the ones worth a call.

Questions people ask about undercounter Sub-Zero units
- A drawer on my Sub-Zero keeps stopping short of shut. Can I still use it?
- For a day, yes, but expect the food inside to warm and frost to build along the top edge. Look for a tall jar or a bag that has fallen behind it. If the drawer still won't seat, rails or seal are the suspects, and booking a visit beats letting the compressor fight that gap for a week.
- Why does my beverage center freeze cans when the setting looks normal?
- Usually the control or its sensor is keeping the cold on longer than it should, and cans sitting where the chilled air enters take the hit first. Move them forward for now. If cans still freeze, a technician tests the sensor and the control rather than guessing.
- Does an undercounter repair mean pulling the unit out?
- Often not. A lot of undercounter work happens from the front: grille, gaskets, rails, hinges, drains and many controls. If removal is needed, you hear why beforehand, and the cabinetry and flooring around the opening are protected.
- Can one visit include my undercounter drawers and the main refrigerator?

- Should I unplug an undercounter unit that never stops running?
