Why the cube shape tells the story
Inside a Sub-Zero freezer, the ice maker works in a short loop. A valve opens for a set moment, water runs through a thin tube into the mold, the freezer chills it, a brief warming of the mold frees the cubes and an arm sweeps them into the bin. The ice maker does not measure how much water arrived. It trusts that the valve was open long enough and that enough pressure pushed water through during that window.
That is why the shape of the cube matters. A full, solid cube means the mold filled. A thin crescent, a cube with a hollow center or a row of small chips means the mold received less water than it was designed for. The freezer may be perfectly cold and the ejector may work flawlessly; the shortfall happened before the water ever reached the mold.
Older houses make that shortfall more likely. Plenty of houses on the street grid below Sunset and up the canyon lanes kept original supply lines while their kitchens were rebuilt around them. Steel piping that has scaled up inside over the years, a long run from the main to a refrigerator on a new wall, a shutoff valve clamped onto a pipe by some long-gone remodeler: each can trim the flow a little, and together they can trim it a lot. - Recall the date of the most recent filter swap and whether the cartridge is the one listed for your model.
- Make sure the supply shutoff, often beneath the sink or inside an adjacent cabinet, is turned all the way open, provided it is reachable without moving the appliance.
- Ask whether a reverse-osmosis or other purification system feeds the refrigerator line; these often reduce pressure.
- Run the kitchen tap at full flow and notice whether it seems weak compared with other faucets in the house.
- Look at whether the ice maker's shutoff arm or switch is set to make ice and the bin sits fully home.

Yes. The ice maker fills for a fixed moment and does not check the amount, so low pressure means less water per cycle and smaller or hollow cubes. A choked filter, a half-turned shutoff or an old valve tapped into the line can cause the same effect even when house pressure is fine.
